Turnout Reached New Highs This Year
How did engagement increase? Voters turned up at the polls. Participation rose across age groups, newly registered voters showed up in force, and more young New Yorkers were ready to vote.
Primary Election Turnout in 2025
The city's primary election showed increases across the board:
- 29.9% voter turnout -- the highest primary turnout in more than a decade.
- Newly registered voters brought new energy to the polls, with a 59.6% turnout rate.
- Voters ages 18-29 doubled their participation compared to 2021, reaching 35.2% turnout. Young voters heeded the message that their enthusiasm boosts turnout.
- 17,000 new voters registered each day, nearly five times the peak seen in 2021.
General Election Turnout in 2025
The 2025 general election saw unprecedented participation citywide. More than 2 million voters showed up -- the largest mayoral general election turnout in over a decade.
More ballots were cast before Election Day than in any previous non-presidential election year!
Ranked Choice Voting in NYC Is Going Strong
Ranked Choice Voting continues to set the standard for what's possible when people rank choices on their ballot. It remained a popular feature of NYC elections in 2025, with candidates using it strategically to help voters make choices with real impact. 79.2% of voters ranked candidates for at least one office.
Small Contributions Were Bigger Than Ever
The Matching Funds Program continued to lead the way, helping uplift diverse candidates. With contributions from New Yorkers across the city, the program reached significant milestones.
- More than $40 million was contributed to city candidates.
- Nearly 200,000 individual contributions were made to campaigns from 252,364 New Yorkers.
- 91.2% of contributions were $250 or less, showing that small dollars make a big difference.
- The average contribution amount was $160, proving that any amount helps candidates run for office.
